I always intended to make many iterations of my mini heart-shape box, but I didn't really have the skills to do it without enormous pain (we all know what it is to work on fusion360). Now that I can model stuff more efficiently, it was time for me to come back to my Valentine's Day project. Looking at it, I am still surprised at how I made that geometry “printable” in vase mode.
The Gcode files I provided are the ones I used to print the examples in the pictures. They give you an idea of the print time and can help beginners to compare with their own files.
PRINTING INSTRUCTIONS
Covers:
- Layer height: The top triangles must be at least at .15 mm to work, but even smaller is better. To make your print less time-consuming, use variable layer height. Just make sure to change layer height at the edges because it changes the way your filament look. Here's an example I used:

- Extrusion Width (In PrusaSlicer: Print Settings → Advanced →Extrusion width): 0.45 mm - 0.65 mm - 0.9 mm
- Those widths should work respectively with .4mm nozzles, .6mm nozzles and .8mm nozzles.
- Since it's a vase mode print, thicker extrusion width make sturdier prints. You can print all those widths with your stock 0.4 mm nozzle without a problem. Since the geometry of the cover is a little bit flatter, it's better to go thicker than 0.4mm, but I still provided the files just in case. I made different variants so that people can have fun experimenting.
- Spiral vase: Enabled
- If you print the 0.4 mm files, maybe you should not enable spiral vase, but make sure the Solid layers setting for Top has at least 1 layer. The slicer will create fuzzies to make the top triangles more solid (see my white heart in the photos).
- Solid Layers: Bottom: 0
- Important if you want the cover not to be closed at the bottom
- Filament type: Any (In my experience, silky PLA is a bad candidate for thicker extrusion widths than your nozzle)
Bottoms:
- Layer Height: As you wish
- Extrusion Width: Any
- Spiral vase: Enabled
- Filament type: No restriction
It's important that you pick the bottom file in relation to the extrusion width of the cover. Vase mode prints models from the outside in, and that's how I calculated the tolerances.
