Handle for ⌀10×3 mm magnets with hole/bore (e.g. these: https://www.clasohlson.com/no/Neodymmagnet-/p/31-1466). Optimized for 0.2 mm layer height, prints nicely without supports despite weird geometry, thanks to staggered layers. Might turn a bit messy underneath because of bridging, but this will not matter after the magnet is inserted.
The hole is internally threaded for M3 screw, I found it much easier to insert the screw than with a self-threading design.
Printing instructions:
- Print at 0.2 mm layer height. The model is designed with staggered layers for printing a hole in the middle of a bridging layer, these are 0.2 mm thick. In theory, integer quotients of 0.2 mm (like 0.1 or 0.05 mm) should also work, while non-integer quotients (like 0.07, 0.15 or 0.3 mm) might lead to weird results.
- 3 perimeters and 100% rectilinear infill for better rigidity and better bridging.
- Aligned seam gives the cleanest-looking result.
- Neither supports nor brim are required. Don't turn precious plastic into waste and save the planet. But consider printing on smooth sheet for better adhesion, even when doing PETG: the whole first layer is just two short perimeters.
- Print without enclosure or with enclosure doors open, maybe just use a draft shield: the bridging layers will benefit greatly from a bit of passive cooling.
- I printed in PETG, but PLA should in theory be up to the task as well, as long as UV resistance is not of concern: all the forces will be transferred quite evenly over the whole length of the screw, so brittleness of the material should not play any important role.
- Bonus pro tip: while it is not at all necessary for the functionality, you might turn off bed heating after first layer and also set bridges fan speed to 100% (the latter setting is available under “Expert" mode in PrusaSlicer). This makes the bridges look a tad nicer. Nobody will ever be able to notice it after the magnet is inserted. But you will know.
Leave a comment if you achieve better results with different settings!
Assembly instructions:
- Push the magnet into the pocket (the pocket is 3 mm deep, but thicker magnets should also do the job)
- Use an M3 screw with countersunk flat head (no longer than 10 mm) to fasten it.
