This simple solution solves the problem of cardboard spools poorly rotating on a central rod.
Expect to see several orders of magnitude reduction in friction.
It slides into the center of a cardboard spool and goes all the way through to the other side. It has six sections that slightly compress so a smooth hump can pass under and around the far side, holding it in place. I measured the diameter and made several revisions of this. This final design fits both my Inland and slightly larger Polymaker Polyterra cardboard spools and tremendously reduces drag and friction while turning. No supports.
Measurement ranges of spools that will fit
As the two pics show the diameter is a little under 52mm so about 52.25 would be the smallest size spool center opening possible. The retainer bumps at the other end are a little over 56mm so the largest opening should not be more than 56. Ideally the spool size is about 54-55mm.
The center hole opening for Polyterra is about 55.25mm, and Inland is about 54.75mm according to my measurements and both cardboard spools fit perfectly.
Print instructions
I printed in PETG .25 layer height, 3 perimeters 20% infill no supports. Print with the flat end down obviously. A 2.5 hour print.
Explanation of why this works
The friction is reduced. Instead of having a two narrow carboard quarter inch widths digging into contact with the spool rod, you now have the entire width of the spool, several inches, as well as it being a smooth plastic and not rough cardboard. The friction force is now spread evenly over a larger and smoother area, reducing drag. Its the same principle of dragging something heavy and rough across grass, you put a large plastic sheet underneath and drag the junk sitting on the sheet using the sheet, removing most of the friction against the groud/ (rod in this case).
