It's always a bit frustrating to use a bunch of pretty filament for supports that just get thrown away. When printing my Wobbly Weeblefly cat toy the other day, I noticed that the grid supports I pulled off the base of the egg actually looked kind of cool in two-color Amolen filament, so this is the result of my experiment in creating a statement pendant out of the supports. I think it was relatively successful, and I hope it inspires you to look for creative reuse ideas for your own supports!

To make your own pendant:

Supplies:

  • UV resin
  • beads of your choice
  • glitter of your choice
  • screw eye, similar to these (affiliate link)
  • chain or cord
  • tape such as packing tape
  • supports from 3d printing project (mine was PLA, Amolen two-color in blue/green)

Instructions:

Either print the Wobbly Weeblefly cat toy, or just print the egg – or part of the egg – from that pattern (I've included the .stl here on on this page). Print with grid supports (in Prusa Slicer – your mileage may vary in other slicers).

When the egg is done, carefully remove the supports from the base. They are a bit fragile so be careful! Trim away parts that stick out or look too weird.  The resulting shape is sort of like a concave donut, with a hole in the middle.

Screw the screw eye into the top of the circle. You may add some glue, or use resin to glue it in.

Tape the entire back of the circle. This will prevent resin from leaking through the hole in the middle or through the structure of the circle, which isn't exactly watertight!

Add a little resin to the hole in the center of the circle. Place some beads of your choice in there, or a cabochon, or anything else that you like. Add a tiny bit of glitter. Cure under UV light.

Add more resin to the concave shape. Add some more glitter if you like. Cure under UV light.

Add more resin and more glitter (not too much – keep it subtle!), cure, and repeat if needed.

Once you feel like you have enough resin applied, and the item is cured, remove the tape from the back – cure again with the back facing up if the back is still liquid.

Attach a chain or cord, wear, and enjoy your one-of-a-kind statement pendant!
