I don't know if you've ever been slapped on the hand by a hanging tag that's flinging around a dog's neck at 1 million miles an hour as it's doing a shake-off, but it hurts like a son-of-a-bitch. The noise isn't that pleasant, either. This pet ID tag sets out to solve both those issues, and more. Please read the Instructions section carefully to understand how to customize and print your nameplate, and what particular dimensions of collar and gov't tags it fits.
List of benefits:
- No jingling noise and no more hands getting slapped: All hanging elements on the collar combined into one nameplate.
- Easily swappable & secure: Open-back design won't fall off, but can be changed out easily.
- Always outward facing information: Large enough to part even the thickest of neck manes, always readable.
- Durable: no moving parts or strain on parts, no need for additional accoutrements hanging from the collar that can damage the name plate. Bonus of unibody plastic design is it doesn't pinch or pull your dog's fur.
- Dog Tested: This tag has been tested by a very picky husky for the past 3 months, and she gives it 5 stars.
Requirements:
This nameplate was designed for the following dimensions:
Collar: 19.1mm wide, 2.5mm thickness
Round gov't tag: 29.15mm diameter, 1.7mm thickness
Octagonal gov't tag: 28.75 inner diameter (edge to edge), .87mm thickness
The bottom layer MUST be .2mm so the text included in the 3mf and the embossment on the plate print correctly and fuse together.
Instructions:
The included .3mf file has 2 versions of the tag, one with just a name, and one with a name and phone number. One tag is cut so it can be printed without supports and then glued together, and the other tag has painted on supports for the critical overhangs. Please be sure to use the alpha release of PrusaSlicer so the pre-added text can be modified.
The sample design is not for print, unless your pet's name is Lilly and your number is ten zeros.
The blank design is incase you are using a different slicer than PrusaSlicer, just make sure your slicer can add text to your models, and follow the instructions below if you want a nameplate with contrasting text rather than embossed.
Steps:
- Select which tag you want to print and delete the other tag and associated text
- Change the placeholder text to your pet's name and your contact number (make sure you do this for any overlapping text as well)
- Hide the tag object(s) from slicing so that only the separate text object(s) are visible and will be sliced. The text is set to .2mm so it is intended to be 1 layer thick.
- Slice the text and save the result so the text is in its own gcode file.
- Unhide the tag elements and hide the standalone text objects. The text that is part of the tag object is set to embossed and is also .2mm.
- Slice the tag and save it as it's own gcode file.
- Print the 1 layer text gcode file and leave it stuck to the bed.
- Switch to a contrasting filament
- Without removing the text from the bed, begin printing the tag.
- IMPORTANT: the standalone text and the text component of the tag need to remain aligned, since it is designed to print the letters and then print the rest of the tag around them.
Notice: This model is not parametric (I'm still learning how to make parametric models), so this really only fits the dimensions of the gov't tags and collar listed in the Requirements section. I am hoping that all the gov't pet tags are standard, but be sure to measure yours before you print this. If there are any tweaks you'd like to see, leave them in the comments or like a comment with those tweaks, and I'll see what I can do.
May your ears finally stop ringing! :)
