This model was inspired in part by the show “Hello Tomorrow” - and also by my interest in science fiction.

There are two variations of this model :

  1. Simple - single print, tail-standing version
  2. Not so simple - this version has a stand, and “flames” for the engines

Note : I you like this model, you may also like the Dr. Zarkov Rocket Ship from the 1936 Flash Gordon serials :

Assembly

Version 2 requires some minor assembly.

Start by attaching the StandArm to the StandBase. The Arm is a tight snap fit into the slot in the Base; grip the Arm tightly just above the snap fitting and press it into place.

The top end of the StandArm is a rotating fit into the slot in the Rocket. Insert the small tab into the slot in the Rocket and push it in and forward while rotating the Rocker to fit the rest of the tab into the slot.

Assemble the Inner and Outer flame pieces before inserting into the rocket nozzles. The outer Flame piece may exhibit some stringing, so I “flame polished” the assembled flame pieces. Insert each of the seven flame assemblies into the rocket nozzles; insert the flames into the main rocket nozzle before inserting the nozzle into the rocket.

Finally, insert the main Nozzle assembly into the Rocket - be sure to orient the four nozzles so they are symmetric to the top fin.

Print Instructions

Print in PLA with colors of your choice. I used Galaxy Silver for the Body and Nozzle, transparent red and yellow for the Flames, transparent clear for the support Arm, and Copper for the stand Base.

Body (both versions) :

Note that Rocket01 does not have a slot, while Rocket02 has a slot for the StandArm.

  • orient pointing up
  • use brim
  • 0.2mm layer height
  • 2 perimeters
  • 0% infill

Nozzle :

  • orient with insert end pointing up
  • use brim - inside and outside
  • 0.2mm layer height
  • 2 perimeters
  • 0% infill

Flames :

  • use brim
  • orient with flame pointing up
  • 0.2mm layer height
  • 0% infill
  • 2 perimeters

StandBase :

  • 5% rectilinear infill
  • 0.1mm layer height (but 0.2mm would likely work as well)
  • 3 perimeters

StandArm :

Because I wanted this piece to be as transparent as possible, I adjusted the settings as shown below. Otherwise the same parameters as those for the flames would likely work. I used these parameters :

  • orient flat on side
  • 12 perimeters
  • 0% infill
  • enable ironing, all top surfaces
  • extrusion multiplier = 1.10
  • fan speed = 0%
  • Nozzle temperature = Other layers : 220
