My wife, a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, requested that I print some variety of a hanging game, something similar to the classic monkeys in a barrel. I decided to develop one from the ground up. This is the result.
About the Game
The following is how I intended for the game to be played, but as is such with most children's games, there are endless ways you could modify the rules to increase the challenge, the fun, or just because you think my rules suck.
- The game can be played with 1 or 2 people. Each ladder is made of 6 colors, with corresponding colors found on the die.
- The game begins with one ladder already hung (see below for how I did this, or come up with your own solution).
- The player then rolls the die. The color shown on the die after the roll is the color of the rung the player must hold on the next ladder piece as they hang it from the lowest rung on the already hanging ladder
- (ie: Die is rolled and shows blue. The player then picks up a ladder and must position their hand/fingers so they they are primarily holding the ladder by the blue part of the ladder. The player then attempts to hang that ladder on the bottom rung of last hung ladder). The idea here is that the further from the hooks at the top of the ladder that the player holds the ladder, the more difficult it is to accurately maneuver it into a hanging position on the hanging ladders.
- Once the ladder is placed, the player then rolls again. The color shown now represents the rung color of ladder they just placed that they must now hang a ‘person’ piece from. (ie: Die is rolled and shows green. The player then chooses a ‘person’ piece of any color, and must now hang it from the green rung of the ladder most recently added to the chain of hanging ladders).
- Play then repeats either by the other player, or by the only player, until all pieces are used or until the ladders fall.
Printing Information
The parts were designed to be printed without multi-material/color, as such, the pieces will need to be glued together once printed. I printed the parts at 0.2mm layer height except the person, which was printed at 0.12mm layer height.
Each ladder consists of a ‘Hook a’ and ‘Hook b’ with a ‘Hook Joiner’ between them and a ‘Hook horizontal connector’ through the joiner and into each hook. A pair of ‘Rung connectors’ are then inserted into the holes on the bottom side of the hooks. A ‘Rung’ is then added onto the exposed rung connectors. Another pair of rung connectors, another rung, rinse & repeat until ladder is complete (You can certainly have a ladder more than 6 rungs tall, but then you'll need to either modify the rules, or modify the die to have enough sides to represent each rung).
I provided the file for the die both as a whole piece, as well as split at an angle for printing without overhangs. Choose whichever you please. A ‘Die color insert’ will need to be printed in each of the colors corresponding to the colors used for the ladder rungs.
You will need supports for the person.
For a single 6-rung ladder, you will need to print the following:
- 6x ‘Rung’ - each in a different color
- 6x ‘Rung connectors' - the file contains a pair of connectors, so you will have 12 total. Color doesn't matter, so these can all be printed together to save time.
- 1x ‘Hook a’
- 1x 'Hook' b'
- 1x ‘Hook joiner’ - The hooks and joiner can be whatever color you want, I would suggest one that isn't in the 6 used for the rungs/die to reduce confusion.
- 1x ‘Hook horizontal connector’ - any color
- Multiple each of the above by the total number of ladders you want.
For the rest of the parts, you will need to print:
- 1x ‘Die body’ or ‘Die body, split’
- 6x ‘Die color insert’ - One in each color used for the rungs.
- 1x ‘Person’ for each ladder you will make. These can be any color.
Tip: If for example you plan on 5 ladders: (Change the bold numbers to match whatever number of ladders you want).
- Bring into your slicer 5 rungs, a pair of rung connectors, a die color insert, and a person. Slice it and print it 6 times, each time in a different color.
- Then in a new slicer instance open both hooks, the hook joiner, and the hook horizontal connector. Either make 5 copies of these in your slicer, or print it 5 times.
- Then print your die body.
Hanging the initial ladder
Since this game was designed with the primary intention of being used in a school setting for providing Occupational Therapy services to students, I couldn't be sure what would be available to use as a mounting location for the game. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I looked through various models on Printables, and settled on this headphone mount by @Beaver. I used a rubber band to secure a pencil to the cord holder portion. The initial ladder is then hung from the secured pencil. A variety of other clamps/mounts/holders could be repurposed into viable solutions. A rubber band hanging from a thumbtack would probably also work fine.
