Loved this model so much I wanted more……   ( Thank you Jéjé l'ingé  @Jejelinge_724355 )

So I added:

  • Sound Module to play the famous movie clip audio

  • Barrel plug for power on the back side rather that side

These are the items I used to make this remix.

  • I used digital pin 2 for high level trigger - which was soldered to the sound module board in the high level trigger position

  • I added a ground to the back of the switch ground and that went to ground on the ESP32 - requires a common ground between the ESP32 and Sound Module

  • ino file with edits are here for download.. just change your SSID and password.

  • Be sure to change your time zone and at line 158 change what time you want it to go off

  • or remix the heck out of it… have it play every hour, every half hour or every quarter hour!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ U P D A T E ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
06/30/2026- 07/01/2026 - As the creator of the v3.11 update for the Back to the Future Clock, I added a web dashboard for easy settings, integrated DS3231 RTC support for instant time after power-up, and enabled safe CR2032 battery use by modifying the RTC board. I also included a power-buffer capacitor to prevent power dips, a WiFi setup/recovery button, and new features like movie presets, sound scheduling, and flexible time-zone handling. This version makes setup, configuration, and daily use much simpler for builders.
The goal was to keep the original Back To The Future Clock design by Jéjé l’ingé intact, while turning the firmware into a more complete, reliable, and user-friendly clock system.
This v3.11 firmware remix adds practical upgrades that make the clock easier to build, configure, troubleshoot, and use day to day:
  • Displays turn on immediately instead of staying blank during WiFi connection issues
  • Present Time is backed by a DS3231 RTC, so the clock can keep time through power loss
  • RTC stores time in UTC, with user-selectable time-zone and DST settings in the web UI
  • No code edits are needed to change Destination Time or Last Time Departed
  • No reflashing is needed just to change WiFi settings
  • Built-in WiFi setup portal allows recovery if the network name or password changes
  • Rear service button can start setup mode without opening the clock or connecting to a computer
  • Web dashboard provides live device status, RTC status, firmware version, MAC address, IP address, and current mode
  • Movie presets allow quick switching between BTTF I, BTTF II, and BTTF III time-circuit values
  • Movie cycle mode can automatically rotate through all three movie presets
  • Sound behavior is configurable, including daily alarm and interval chime options
  • A 1000µF capacitor can be added across the 5V/GND bus to help smooth display and sound-module power dips
  • The RTC board can be modified for safe CR2032 use by disabling the module’s charging diode
Overall, this remix keeps the original visual design and clock concept intact, but upgrades the electronics and firmware experience into something closer to a finished smart display prop.
