Is the spring design necessary on both conector sides?
No, but i like the symmetry of the pattern and it ensures the function with stiff material

My apologies to everybody who got confused. I somehow messed up the file upload all previous file have been the medium fit only.
Square and hex in all fits uploaded and a step file to be able to modify anything from your side with ease.
