An angled mount for your Philips Hue interior motion sensor for when the magnet mount alone just won't cut it.

What

This is an angled mount for the Philips Hue Interior motion sensor. It includes an screw base which can be turned to the right angle and fixed to the wall. The Sensor mount is connected with its original magnet mount which screws into the mount.

Why

I have a couple of Philips Hue Motion sensors, one of which is installed in a stairwell. As it needs to look down the stairs, the mount doesn't really tilt far enough and it looks a bit unsightly.  I wanted a mount hat allows it to look more robust and provide a better angle.

How

  • The model comes in two parts.
The mount itself and the mount base.
  • You need six 8mm x 3mm neodymium magnets.
6 (three each) for the mount/base interface.
  • You will need the mounting screw and magnet that came with your sensor and one additional screw..

Process and Assembly

  1. Print and base and mount.
  2. Using the screw and magnet that came with the sensor fix the magnet into the mount by screwing it into the small hole in the center of the face of the mount.
You may need to drill the hole out slightly, or heat the screw under hot water so it softens the plastic as it screwed in.
  3. Connect the sensor to the magnet. It should fit easily and have a small gap around all four sides. The back should sit flush with the mount. Remove the sensor for now and put it aside.
  4. Take your six 8mmx3mm magnets and split them into pairs (So the two magnets  in each pair attract), and ensure all pairs have polarity aligned the same way. ie “N/S,  N/S, N/S” not  “N/S, S/N, N/S” otherwise you will limit your mounting options later.
  5. Take the mount base and put a small amount of super glue into one of the 8mm holes.
    1. Press fit one magnet pair into hole so the magnet in the base sits flush with the surface.
    2. ‘wipe’ the free magnet away and place it off to one side, away from any other magnets.
Press fit the other magnet firmly into the base and wipe away any excess glue.
    3. Repeat for the other two magnet pairs.
  6. Place the free magnets back onto each of the mount base magnets (to ensure polarity is correct when inserting them into the mount itself).
  7. Take the mount and place a small amount of super glue into one of the 8mm holes.
    1. Take one of the free magnets off its mate and rotate it 180 degrees (So the top face of the magnet will face into the bottom of the hole in the mount.)
    2. Press the magnet into the hole so it is flush with the surface.
    3. Wipe away any excess glue.
    4. Repeat for the other two magnet pairs.
  8. Connect the mount to the mount base. It should snap into place and need reasonable force to pull alert.
    1. Remove the mount from the base and reseat after rotating the mount though 120 degrees. (This confirms all pairs have the same polarity).
    2. Repeat again for the last 120 degrees.
  9. Remove the mount from the base and it it to one side
  10. Take your additional screw and screw it into the mount base.
You may need to drill the hole slightly bigger or use hot water to heat the screw so it softens the plastic as you screw it in.
  11. Locate where you want the sensor to be placed and press the mount base against the surface.
  12. Use a drill with screw driver bit to fix the base to the surface.
Do not tighten it yet, the base should be able to re
  13. Fix the mount to the base and fit the sensor into the mount.
  14. Twist the mount so that it point in the direction you want it to monitor (typically up or down the stairs, of if this is a ceiling mount, it the direction you want)
  15. Remove the mount of the base taking care not to twist it.
  16. Tighten the screw holding the base to the surface until it doesn't move if twisted gently.
  17. Connect the mount to the base. (It should still be pointing in the desired direction.)
  18. Configure your sensor as per Philips Hue instructions.
