Closely following the Hat, Spectre is a shape for aperiotic tiling that does not need to be flipped. More details are in this arxiv preprint.
There is a parametric openscad model to generate the tile (or multiple) with different parameters.
The grid pattern on top makes it clear which side is supposed to be up and avoid flipping the pattern. This is also producing some interesting patterns when combined.
Two options to print the grid in color:
- use the models with the grid pattern sticking out and do a layer color change
- use the tile/grid version to generate a multicolor print. A gcode version requiring 2 mid-layer color change is provided. This file require 2 manual mid-layer color change. Base color to black at 16 min and black to base color at 20 min. This version is better printed upside-down.
