Overview

This is a simple challenge coin template you can use to make your own customized challenged coins using your favorite 3D modeling software. Simply import SVGs onto the Inner Plates, print, snap fit into the perimeter (add glue if desired for stability) and you're good to go.

This has been designed for PLA and tested with a 0.4mm nozzle at 0.10mm layer height but should work fine with a variety of other configurations. The original intent was to provide a scannable QR code on the back plate of the coin which you can easily generate at sites such as https://forqrcode.com/. There is also enough space in the middle of the coin that you can place an NFC tag though it is a very tight fit and not all devices can scan NFC very well.

Directory Layout

Templates

This directory contains the core model files you can use to create your own coins. Simply import the files into your 3D modeling software, create a top and bottom plate from the Inner Plate template, adjust text on the outer ring, and print.

Other Directories

I use this coin design to make free challenge coins to hand out at conventions. Each directory is the name of the convention and the coin made. You can feel free to use these either as examples to follow or you can reprint ones of your own should you have missed your opportunity to obtain one from me at the time.

Tips

  • If you use superglue to add stability to the coin you may get a light “dusting” after it dries. This is because of the bonding material combining with moisture. To reduce this, you can glue in a low humidity environment or use a fan, but if you get some anyway it can be easily and quickly removed with a bit of petroleum jelly (Vaseline or similar). Simply apply a small amount onto the affected area and wipe off
  • Should you decide to print QR codes you will want to use high contrasting material to improve the legibility for scanners
  • I recommend using an M600 code to change filaments easily, this can be done either in Prusaslicer or inserted manually into the GCODE
