I purchased a used HP ScanJet 5590 for a few bucks, but it was missing the automatic document feeder tray. Replacement trays are available for purchase, but I didn't want to spend more money on something I don't use very often - it was cheaper and more fun to design and print my own.

My version is not as fancy as the original, but it does the job and costs less than $3 [US, 2023] in filament (plus another $1 or so for printing test parts).

Note : Included in the photos are pictures of the “original” ADF tray for comparison.

Assembly

Insert each of the two adjustable guide pieces by first inserting one side of the slider part into the slot, then squeeze the slider parts together and insert the slider fully into the slot (it will be a tight fit). Note that the slots have “teeth” to keep the guides in place once they are positioned (unlike the original in which the two guides automatically move in tandem, the two guide positions must be adjusted individually).

The extension tray simply slides into the slot in the end of the main tray. Note that the extension tray has two detents to keep it at a fixed extended position (but can other wise be completely removed). You can slide the extension tray into the main tray when not in use. The tray is a tight fit, so I recommend removing the entire assembly from the scanner to adjust the tray extension.

The assembled tray fits into the two tab slots in the scanner, and is simply held in place by friction and its own weight.
