If you are looking for some finished product to print, this is not for you!

What is is?

It is a module (you may also call it plug-in, extension,..) for OpenSCAD which will enable you to use a vertically printed print-in-place hinge in your designs.

Features

Fully customizable, measurements, number of segments, gaps. There are however no safeguards against unwise choices, so if the numbers you choose yield a design that looks like it won't print well or work at all then it probably won't do any of these things.

How to use

put:

use <hinge.scad>;

at the beginning of your code.

To generate a hinge, just use the command

hinge();

with the parameters you need, they are all optional but some should be set by you because by default it creates a simple 90 degree hinge.

Parameters
NameDefaultDescriptionRange
ds3Smaller diameter of the inner axlesmaller than dl
dl4Lager diameter of the inner axlelarger than ds
da6Outer diameter of the hinge bodylarger than dl
segments1Number of segments≥1
h14Total height of the hingeat least 10mm per segment
opening_angle90Angle the hinge is allowed to turn30-180
start_angle0Position of the hinge for printing≥0
lever20Length of the lever
shoulder0.2Small offset in the axle
h_gap0.25Horizontal gap in the diameterdepending on your printers precision
v_gap0.2Vertical gap between the parts1-2 times your layer height
Example

Here is an example of the usage of the hinge in an Adjustable Desktop Fan Stand:

hinge(lever=16, segments=2, h=full_h, opening_angle=110, h_gap=h_gap, v_gap=v_gap);

Printing

Please ensure that the v_gap is a multiple of your layer height. E.g. if you use 0.2mm layers, set v_gap to 0.2 or 0.4.

Slicers try to hide seams in hidden places like the insides of this hinge. Please convince them to put them elsewhere.

Testing

Use the test samples to find out which tolerances work best for your printer. I have included a small Perl script which generates all the test sampled for you.
