Introduction

I wanted a box for Posca markers, but didn't like any that already existed. So I made my own. Advantages of my design:

  • Parametric: as many markers, or as few, as you need. Also allows tolerance adjustments.
  • Can be positioned vertically (on its end) or horizontally (on one of its large faces).
  • Has a slide-on lid.
  • Markers are held in two places, so they won't wobble or shift when stored horizontally.
  • Prints on small printers (like the KP3S or Prusa Mini).
  • Easy to print: no overhangs or bridges, no supports required.

More specifically, this box is designed for Posca markers, of sizes PC-1 (small holes) and PC-3 (big holes). The provided files fit four of each, but since the design is parametric, you can make one that fits as many or as few as you want.

How to print

Material

Anything will work really: the prints in the pictures were printed using KiwiFil PLA Pro, in Cranberry and Light Marble, but you can use any PLA, or in fact, most other materials. If you expect the box to take a lot of knocks, you may want to consider PETG or ABS (or ASA), but this isn't necessary if it's just going to live on a desk or in a drawer.

Print settings

This model is designed around specific settings, as well as some recommended ones. You can check the FreeCAD project file (specifically, the ‘Print settings’ spreadsheet) for the mandatory settings based on what nozzle diameter you're using. To make things easier, I've summarized the settings for 0.4mm and 0.6mm nozzles below. The setting names are based on PrusaSlicer - if you use something else, the settings should still exist, just under different names.

SettingValue (0.4mm nozzle)Value (0.6mm nozzle)Notes
Layer height0.2mm0.3mmYou can go lower, but not higher: this will weaken layer adhesion and can cause the model to break at the layer lines. Mandatory setting.
First layer height0.3mm0.3mmSee above.
Perimeters3+2+
Minimum shell thickness (top)0.8mm (1.2mm preferred)0.9mm (1.2mm preferred)This corresponds to 4 (6) layers at 0.4mm, and 3 (4) layers at 0.6mm. Mandatory setting.
Minimum shell thickness (bottom)0.8mm (1.2mm preferred)0.9mm (1.2mm preferred)See above.
Fill density15% (25% preferred)15% (25% preferred)
Fill patternCubicCubicYou can use a different pattern, but cubic has a good combination of properties, while also printing reasonably fast.
Extrusion width (infill and solid infill)0.72mm1.08mmThis corresponds to 180% of the nozzle diameter. Since infill is volume-based, this will mean fewer lines, and hence, faster infill printing.
Extrusion width (other)0.4mm0.6mmThis corresponds to 100% of the nozzle diameter. Mandatory setting.

Clearances

The model has some tight clearances: specifically, around the insert for the markers at the top of the box, and for the lid. If you are unsure, print the top ~10mm of the box, and the top ~5mm of the lid, as well as the insert, and check that the insert fits (it should be snug, but still fit), and that the lid can slide. The easiest way to do this is to use PrusaSlicer's built-in cut feature: in Cura, you can simulate this by ‘sinking’ the model below the build plate.

Parametric modification

You can modify the following parameters:

  • How many big (PC-3) markers you want.
  • How many small (PC-1) markers you want.
  • Your nozzle diameter.
  • Tolerances for the insert fit.
  • Tolerances for the lid fit.

The pre-defined values are for 4 markers of each type, and 0.4mm nozzles. The fit tolerances are reasonably good for a 0.4mm print, but you might want to adjust for your printer, especially if you increase the nozzle diameter.

To adjust this to your needs, do the following:

  1. Open the source file (posca-marker-box.Fcstd) in FreeCAD. You want to use the Link Tip FreeCAD (or FreeCAD 1.0 or later, when it comes out).
  2. Go to the ‘Parameters’ spreadsheet in the Combo View.
  3. Change the values in the spreadsheet to your needs. Make sure to press Enter after each change so the model recomputes.
  4. Click on each of ‘lid’, ‘box’ and ‘insert’ to select them in the Combo View, then go File → Export. You can export into any format FreeCAD supports: this includes STL, STEP and 3MF.

If you have trouble, please let me know! I'm happy to generate and upload versions for any number of markers, and if there are issues in the FreeCAD project, I can fix them.
