I was using a cordless drill to drive the winder and decided to design my own motor driven system.  This design is a little simpler than some of the others I have seen with the automatic shut off sensors and redesign of the gears and original mount.  I had some spare electronics parts laying around that I used for this one.

In addition to printing all files listed you will need the following:
  • 2 additional 608 bearings
  • 2 M3 x 30mm screws, washers and nuts
  • 6 M3 x 10mm self taping screws
  • 2 M2 x 15mm screws, washers and nuts
  • A small DC powered motor.  I had an N20 reduction geared motor that I used.
  • A DC power supply wall brick.  I had an 9V that I used.
  • An on off switch.  I used this one and it works well at 9V.
  • You will need to print the “Compact Planetary GearXox” designed by ProfBoots on Thingiverse.  This increased the torque adequately for the motor I used.
  • I would suggest mounting the original winder frame, the new pulley support frame and the motor mount to a flat surface for stability.  I used a scrap piece of wood.

Print settings:

I printed everything at .16 layer height.

  • The axis and planetary gearbox should be printed in PLA at 100% infill.  No supports needed.
  • The pulley mount, switch box, wire clip all print in PLA at 20% infill with no supports.
  • The pulleys and motor mount also PLA at 20% infill but need minimal supports to retain integrity.
  • The drive belt needs to be in TPU at 100% infill.

Assembly Instructions:

  1. Follow the wiring diagram provided to connect the DC converter power supply to your switch and motor.  I AM NOT AN ELECTRICIAN so do this at your own risk.  If you are not comfortable don't do it.  If you don't have the same switch, I have provided the STEP file for the box lid so you can modify it.
  2. You will need to replace the 45mm axis with the new axis from this project.  You should be able to re-assemble into the main winder body without any modifications.
  3. To assemble the large pulley mount, you will start by inserting one of the 608 bearings closest to the winder frame.  Begin sliding the mount with the inserted bearing onto the new axis. Once you can see the axis protruding through the inside of the pulley mount,  insert the large pulley between the bearing mounts.  You will need to have the TPU belt around the pulley as well because you wont be able to put it on later.  Continue sliding the pulley mount onto the axis until it passes through the outside of the mount closest to you.  Insert the 2nd bearing.  Attach pulley mount to stable surface with 2 M3x10mm screws.
  4. Attach motor to motor mount with appropriate hardware that works for your motor.  I realize that every motor is going to be a bit different so I have supplied the STEP file for the motor mount so you can modify as needed.  The main thing to notice is that the drive shaft of the motor needs to line up with the center of the planetary gearbox attached to the front of the mount which will be attached in the next step.
  5. Attach planetary gearbox with M2x15mm screws, washers and nuts
  6. Attach motor mount to stable surface with 2 M3x10mm screws as shown in pictures provided.  The center of the planetary axis and pulley mount axis should be 152mm apart.  The position of the mount can also be seen in top view close up provided.
  7. Slide the small pulley over the planetary gearbox sprocket.
  8. Slip the TPU belt over the small pulley first.  You should then be able to work the belt over the large pulley.  It's tight but it will fit with a little effort.
  9. If you wish you can attach the switch box to your stable surface.  I used hot glue since it was on a scrap piece of wood.  You can also secure wires to the surface with the wire clip provided.
  10. ENJOY!

I hope this works for everyone as it has for me.  I can turn it on and do other things while I wait for the spool to wind.  Please don't leave it unattended for safety reasons.
