Hinge for Composteur

This model is a set two hinges made to fit with a wood composter with 2 half covers and 45x45 mm frame.

It is composed by 4 printable parts for left / right and male / female hinge. Each part are marked Left M, Left F, Right M, Right F on the inside.

Both Male parts are designed with a small gap between the axle pin and the body. This is forcing the slicer to generate twice the number perimeters around the axle but the gap is small enough so the axle pin will be welded inside the body.

Even with this reinforcement, I broke a couple of axle. The original design was then modified to include a screw hole on the hinge male axle in order to avoid layer separation.

Print instructions

Make sure to print all parts with the hinge axle following the Z axis. A 40 mm wood screw will be used to strengthen the axle and prevent layer separation. No support required.

Recommended print settings:

• 0.20 mm layer height
• 3 perimeters with a .4 mm nozzle
• 15% infill with Gyroid pattern

Assembly

You will need the following consumable for the assembly.

⚠ both left and right hinges axles have opposite direction, this means you will not be able to screw each part on the respective frame and assemble the hinge after. You need to screw the parts with the frame with assembled hinges as per step #3.

1. Screw the x2 ∅4.5 - 40 mm flat head wood screws into the Left M and Right M axle on the dedicated hole. I recommend applying some wax to facilitate screwing. Those screws are not used for any assembling but reinforcing the axle and avoid layer separation.
2. Screw both Left M and Right M on the rear frame using x8 ∅4 - 20 mm flat head wood screws.
3. Insert the Left F and Right F parts on the respective hinge axle.
4. Screw both Left F and Right F on the front frame using x8 ∅4 - 20 mm flat head wood screws.
