Zombicide Action Bar is a game aid designed to assist with managing actions for all Zombicide games (Original, Black Plague, Invader, and stand-a-lone expansions such as Green Horde).

Each 'flipper' represents an action. Before a Survivor starts their turn, flip up the available corresponding actions. As the survivor uses an action, flip the associated flipper down. Easy!

Painting

Why Paint?

I think its useful to color code the Flippers with the available actions. For instance, there are 4 different actions based on Player Level
  • Green - standard actions
  • Blue - Some Survivors get an extra action for their Blue skill.
  • Yellow - All survivors get an extra action for their Yellow skill.
  • Orange - Some survivors get an extra action for their Orange skill.
  • Red - Some survivors get an extra action for their Red Skill.

Painting

I always prime (using spray paint) the model first to ensure the layer paint adheres properly to the model. I used an inexpensive grey primer from my local hardware store. I then used model paints to apply to all components.

Outlining

I was originally thinking of outlining all of the components with a white line. You can see that in the first Flipper. I also tried outlining in Black (the second and third flippers). I settled on just leaving the entire flipper as its base coat as I didn't like the outline. I also outlined the bottom of the platform but only did the strip on the front. You are free to experiment on this.

How I Designed This

I really enjoy playing Zombicide especially Black Plague. As the game progresses, Survivor turns can take longer and involve more actions. I found myself keeping track of my actions on my fingers at times. This caused me to search out for a solution. I noticed some people have created tokens to track actions but I felt like this was too cumbersome especially having tokens for specific actions (Move, Search, Ranged Attack, etc). rnrnI wanted a dashboard like solution as I am super keen on the ZBP dashboards. I also wanted a solution that was FAST to use and something that could be re-used for all survivors' turns. I saw some trap door designs and that sparked the idea of creating an Action Bar.rnrnMy original thought was to print out 6 Action Bars but after implementing and using, I think only 1 Action Bar is necessary. For a multiplayer game, just assign Action Bar duty to a single player and they can manage the actions for all Survivors.rnrnThe Action Bar width is the same as a Dashboard. I was hoping that the Action Bar wouldn't take up too much space. I haven't yet tried to fit it in the box. Everything can be scaled down a bit if you find it too big. I tend to think the size of the flipper is nice and is easy to grasp in the fingers.

Example

Its Ann's turn (from ZBP) and she is currently on the Blue XP level. The Action Bar flips up the first 3 action flippers. Here is Ann's turn.

Action 1

  • Ann performs a move action moving 1 square into a building (that door is already open)
  • The first Flipper on the Action Bar is flipped down.

Action 2

  • Ann performs a Search Action.
  • The second Flipper of the Action Bar is flipped down.

Action 3

  • Ann performs a Move Action.
  • The third Flipper of the Action Bar is flipped down.
