Use M3x5x20 female to female hex standoffs. Brass standoffs are slimmer than nylon, so pick the right version (4.6mm vs 5.6mm).
Use M3 x 6 screw to secure the standoffs on the gear side.
I advise to replace the other small gears as well so they can spin freely without friction (inner dia 3.5 instad of 3.1)
