Because old designs never die; they just seed the imagination for new designs.

This is an archive of retired/legacy/deprecated designs associated with the Simple Water Rocket Launcher (Model 86434). In classic engineering fashion, it is preserved with the hope that it will be useful to someone, somewhere, someday.

To be clear, these designs are NOT RECOMMENDED for printing or active use. This page helps keep the main project clean to avoid confusion.

2024-05 Legacy PVC Pipe Feet and Pegs
  • The original launcher design used PVC pipe for the Legs with a printed Foot to adapt to the Peg. The Peg fit inside the PVC pipe, which required different Pegs for different regional pipes. Since the introduction of a fully-printed Leg with integrated Foot in Summer 2023, all posted Makes have used printed Legs. Retiring PVC pipe legs allows additional design latitude for the Peg, Carrier, and Base.

2023-06 Legacy Core Type A (v1.2)

  • Build instructions at Instructables, v1.2
  • Print settings: Line width: 0.4-0.45mm, layer height: 0.20mm, 3 walls, 100% concentric infill, supports touching buildplate
2023-06 20.0mm OD Base, Foot, Peg, Carrier (beta)
  • Sized for 20mm metric pipe. Retired with development of 3D printed Legs
  • Last compatible with v1.2
2023-06 Ledge Fin Mounts (beta)
  • Early fin prototypes that mounted to the bottle flange with a goal for bottle-independent fin designs. Many retractions jammed up my extruder with heat-creep; even after redesign, it was too heavy. Deprecated with improved fins associated with decision to focus on Polar Seltzer 1L bottle form factor.
2023-07 Part Selection (transition from v1.2 to v1.4)
  • As of June 2023, v1.2 had 3 different clamps, 5 Cores, two Bases, 4 Feet and 4 Pegs. Different combinations were required for different regions due to permutations of available pipes and bottles.
  • Development of 3D-printed legs allowed deprecation of 20.0mm launcher subsystem
  • Harmonizing O-ring height and refinement of Core C allowed retirement of Core A, removing special Clamp requirements
  • Additional data on EU GME30.40 specs and above Core simplification allows unification of Clamps
  •  As a result, there is now one Universal design (Base, Clamps, Legs, Peg) with a few options for PVC pipe.
  • Happily, the Guide for Part Selection is no longer needed, but is here as a reminder of the constant design tension between universality and localization.
