My family has two RadPower Radrunner2’s and I wanted a key chain model to print different color key chains for the battery keys and wheel lock keys for each bike. I really like the Bike shaped keyring, but thought it would be more interesting if it looked like a radrunner, or something to do with RadPower Bikes. I thought I could recreate the RadPower Logo:

But I had wanted to try tracing an image into a vector graphic and converting to 3D - This is actually pretty easy to do – well at lesat to jump start a 3D model. I did mine in Inkscape then tinkerCAD – once I had a model I was able to tweak the shape and add “welds” to make the logo (which is not connected to each other). I was aiming for a filled model but I actually like the outline of the logo better as a 3D shape with its tiny concentric tires.
The STL’s make a bike/keychain about 35mm long but it should scale – give it a try! I did mine in PLA+ with a 0.25mm nozzle (though 0.4 should be fine) and 0.1mm layer height and no supports needed.
Making 3D shapes from images:
- First grab an image, works best with simple line images
- Tracing a bitmap – I did it in the open source Inkscape
- Import your image
- Select your image
- From the menu bar, select Path > Trace Bitmap Item
- Adjust the tracing parameters as needed
- Export as svg
- Import the SVG into a modeling program – I used the free online TinkerCAD which allows you to convert to a 3D modeling
- Adjust height and other aspects in there (add support, etc)
