Set your smartphone free!

This design is a mounting bracket adapter that lets you use a GoPro Hero3(+) with

the DJI OSMO Mobile smartphone steady-cam stablizer. This frees up your smartphone

for doing smartphone stuff and gives you the ability to shoot wide-panoramic video

with super-smooth mechanical stability in-motion.

Cool features in this design:

  1. Uses a USB battery bank as the camera ballast, allowing you to charge the GoPro while on the stabilizer,
  2. Uses 3mm bungee cords to retain the battery and camera allowing for easy install/removal and flat-packing the adapter,
  3. Provides 20mm of travel for sliding the adapter to the center-of-gravity (CG) of the OSMO grip-clamp to get ideal balance,

Besides the print, you'll also need the following:

  • (~1m) Nylon-braid wrapped 3mm (1/8") bungee cord
  • (2) Nylon barrel cord pull-stop toggles
  • (2) Cord end-stop tugs
  • (1) Mini USB battery bank (see Reference & BOM Links)

Notes:

  1. Nozzle Temp: 215C
    1. Cut the bungie cord into two ~50cm lengths
    2. Battery Retainer: Loop lace the cord through from the front of the adapter through the two narrow-spaced holes in the front of the adapter, bring one through and back on the wide-spaced holes, then secure with pull-stop toggle (see photos)
    3. Camera Retainer: Loop lace the cord through from the front right-hand side of the camera, x-cross in the back and lace both through the holes on the left-side of the camera, secure with pull-stop off the side of the assembly,
    4. Insert the camera and battery and tighten the bungee cords enough to firmly secure the components,
    5. Trim the bungee cord ends to ~3cm and install cord end-stops... recommend a little cyanoacrylate glue in the end-stop to really hold them on.
  2. IMPORTANT: Getting balance on this before turning the OSMO on is critical... The CG of the adapter with the camera and batter installed should line up dead-center on the grip-clamp's center of rotation for optimal performance (and to keep from burning out the stabilizer motors).
  3. I'm going to play with the cord hole positions on the battery retainer... the wide-spacing position interferes with the grip-clamp on the OSMO.
  4. Considering some smaller/lighter USB battery options as this one is a bit beefy even at it's pocket-able size
  5. May make variants for other action camera form-factors as needed... Will upload to this design.
  6. Feel free to make remixes of this for other cameras & batteries... I can share the TinkerCAD design, just DM me!
