For those of us that don't want to upgrade just for the sake of a usb-c port, I present the long boi. Depending on the adapter used, this can act as a data condom too.

Current versions are up for the XS and XR - I'll take requests for others, that's just what I had on hand to test with.

Printing:

Most of the stl files contain multiple parts. This is not an indication to multi-material, rather, you should have your slicer split the part, orient, and plan out your prints from there.

The part of the case with corners should be TPU, and everything else should be a hard plastic of choice.

The TPU part will probably need some de-stringing. Use snips.

I also recommend doing some cutouts on the case to personalize it.

Prep:

  • Soft filament, eg TPU
  • Hard filament of choice, eg ABS, PLA
  •  “Lightning Male to USB C Female Adapter” (drop that string in aliexpress/google/ebay)
    • The specific one used here:
  • Extract the PCB. Using some kind of snips to crack the outer shell, and then peeling it away is probably the least risky method. Dremel works fine too, just be careful about hitting the PCB.
  • Test your extracted PCB!
    • It should charge
    • It should not get unreasonably hot
  • Tray sizing - the included tray stl is built to clamshell around the above picture's PCB. If your PCB doesn't look like that, then you'll need the tray-blank step file. Just model your PCB (verrry roughly), and subtract it from the blank tray, then split the tray along the flat plane

Assembly:

  1. Sandwich the PCB between the tray halves
  2. Jam the tray into the TPU section (from bottom→up)
  3. Connect the tray with the hard-case section
  4. Align / insert the rest of the two halves for a complete case. It should look like this:
  5. Insert phone into exposed lightning connector.
  6. Lever-action the phone into the rest of the case
