I've got a few landscape spotlights that produce an annoying glare when walking by them.  Searching a bit, I found the solution to the problem was to place a louver (or louvre) between the bulb and the lens of the spotlight housing.  Many featured a honeycomb pattern to cut down on the glare produced by the light regardless of viewing angle outside of ~45º, so I figured making my own wouldn't be too difficult.

The honeycomb wafer is 4mm thick with a 5mm riser, to keep the honeycomb away from the surface of the bulb.  Without the riser, the honeycomb will deform and melt ASA/ABS (believe me, I know).  The total height is 9mm which many landscaping spotlights should be able to accommodate.  In my case, my combination of MR16 and spotlight fixtures could accommodate up to 14mm in total height.  Pictured prints are Prusament ASA - Jet Black.

Important notes:  For use only with LED MR16 bulbs, and not halogen.  I would suggest using ASA/ABS/PC/PCCF.  I have not tried PETG, but I doubt the print will hold up.  PLA is a no-go.

NOTES - 2025-07-10:

  • After about a year and a half of having ASA louvers installed, I noticed the center of the honeycomb had started to sag.  Reprinted in PCCF and replaced which I'll assume will hold up for longer.  Of course thickening the hex walls or adding additional space would also mitigate the issue, but I'm especially hesitant to implement the former.
  • Added Fusion360 file so that additional variants/customizations can be created by adjusting parameters.
