Summary

A high quality clip with a lightweight and fun design! Perfect for holding paper or marking your place in a book. This simple organization tool is an easy addition to office or work life. Dimensions- 60mm/130mm/1.5mm

Lesson Plan

Our Engineering and Design class was tasked with recreating a 1:1 replica of a ghost paperclip in groups of two. The catch was, our replicas not only had to match the original but each other. This lesson tested our problem solving and planning skills by forcing us to come up with the most efficient way to recreate the not so complicated ghost, our teamwork and communication skills, and our ability to adapt and revise our initial plan to work better and more efficiently. See my partner’s Juke Howe’s Printable report here.

Design Choices

Our final design for the ghost, gladly, ended up pretty much identical to our original ghost schematic and design plan, but we did have one logistical change that needed to be made during the creation process.

Our change was which point to reference our line off of. We changed our reference point from the centerpoint of the arc capping off the mouth to the starting point of the line which we offset to form the mouth. We originally planned to create the midline of the mouth and offset two lines on each side to form the final mouth, but the way we went about locating the starting point for the midline was merely eyeballing the middle and measuring the imaginary point’s relation to other parts of the ghost. With some teacher feedback, we realized there was no legitimate way for us to know for certain that the imaginary point we were visioning was 13 cm away from the edge, as we had measured. Which meant our project was prone to error before we had even began. So instead we changed the reference point to the edge of the mouth. This was a point we could actually measure for certain and remove that bit of possible error we were afraid of.

In the end this tiny fix helped us remove possible errors and made the end product overall more similar to the original model.

Assembly

  • Constraint Box

0.  Make a center rectangle marked as for construction on the origin, dimensioned 130mm tall by 60mm wide.

  • Main Box

1. Make a construction line in the top left corner extending straight down 7.5mm.

2. From the bottom of that line, create a box out of lines 60mm x 112.5 mm with the top and bottom lines as construction lines.

3. Delete the line from step 1.

  • Top Arcs

4. Make a construction line going from the top right edge of the inside box to the center with a length of 7.5mm

5. Make a center point arc at the end of the construction line from the previous step with radius of 7.5 mm.

6. Use the linear sketch pattern tool to make 4 arcs 15 mm apart to the right.

7. Delete construction line from step four

  • Bottom Spikes

8. Create a line from the bottom left of the inside box to the bottom of the constraint box offset 10mm right

9. Create a second line off from the end of the previous line back to the bottom of the inner box going another 10mm right.

10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 on the bottom right of the inner box going to the left.

11. Add a line at the end of each triangle’s inner point that is on the inner rectangle connected to the midpoint of the constraint box.

  • Eyes

12. Make a circle 20mm from the top of the inner box and 17mm from the left side with a radius of 6mm.

13. Mirror this circle across the symmetry line with mirror entities tool.

  • Mouth

14.Create a point 40mm from the top and 12mm from the side, create a construction line extending down by 45 mm from the point, then another line construction extending down at 135° until it connects to the midline.

15. Mirror both lines across the symmetry line

16. Select the 4 construction lines and use the offset tool to offset inward by 5mm and cap off the ends with curves.
