What is this?

The Qidi XPlus3 has a dedicated fan, and compartment, for chamber filtering (it's even labelled that way), but unlike the XMax3, doesn't have a place for activated carbon to go. Given that they provide you a bag of carbon to use with the printer, this is a little strange. While you can use a muslin bag, or something else with air pores, this isn't very convenient or easy.

This box is designed to fit (fairly) snugly into the compartment in an XPlus3, while also being easy to print and assemble. You can put your carbon in, tighten the screws, put it in, and let it do its thing.

Parts needed

To make this box, you will need:

  • Top and bottom parts (printed, see below for settings).
  • Two M3x10 screws, DIN912/ISO 4762.
  • Two M3 heatset inserts, diameter 4.6mm, length 4mm. You can use a wider or shorter insert (as long as it's not more than 5mm wide or shorter than 3mm), but a narrower or longer one won't fit.

See the attached image for assembly. Essentially, heatset inserts go into the holes in the bottom part, and the screws go through the holes in the top part, and get tightened into the inserts in the bottom part.

Print settings and material

As this will spend time in a heated chamber that can reach well in excess of 50C, PLA is not a suitable material. PETG will work OK, but the screws might loosen over time. ABS or ASA is the preferred material, but PC would probably work too.

The settings that this model was designed around are as follows:

  • 3 perimeters at least, 4 ideally
  • 15% cubic or support cubic infill (though it doesn't matter much)
  • 0.2mm layer height
  • 0.4mm extrusion width
  • 0.4mm nozzle

Print orientation is shown in the attached image: essentially, the bottom part must have its open side facing upwards, and the top part must have its wider holes facing up.
