Process Description :
This challenge was taken on as an individual challenge by one of our team members. He began by researching the functioning of a healthy heart and what an artificial heart would need to do. He then worked through what might be feasible for a 3D printed pump with the materials we had. He began with sketches and eventually moved into creating 3D models in Autodesk Inventor. Models were printed and then improved upon. We have included pictures of his design notebook at the end of this description:
Design Summary:
This artificial heart pump was designed as a very temporary band aid that could be printed with common printers and materials. It is a simple dual port bellows design made from flexible TPU filament. The bellows are compressed be a plate connected to two lead screws. The lead screws can be driven by a variety of motors. In our test model, we used VEX V5 motors.
