Printing the base

For printing, download base1.stl and base2.stl. The model can be joined using 1.75mm filament as pins.

I recommend a translucent dark orange filament. However orange or dark red work too.

Making the tiles (in metal)

To make the tiles, you will need a CNC router/engraver with the following bits:

  • 30 degree cutter
  • 1/16" endmill

You will also need the following material:

  • 0.062" thick 3003 H14 Aluminum Sheet (pre-cut sheets can be found on ebay, design requires at least 2 5"x8" sheets)

I have included the design files to make the tiles. I recommend the following cutting operations:

  1. The angular triangle lines and letters should be cut as a pocket with a 30 degree cutter
  2. The outermost perimeter with the sharper corners should be cut on the outside with the 1/16" endmill

After cutting:

  1. Using a file, round the corners of the triangles
  2. Remove any burrs from cutting using high grit sandpaper
  3. Buff to a shine
  4. Clean thoroughly with soap, water, and a soft bristle brush
  5. Anneal the triangular pieces to soften them for forming later. (I used a propane torch)
  6. Paint the carved areas with black enamel paint
  7. Using acetone and Q-tips to clean off the surface
  8. Print the attached doming tool
  9. With a shop vice, press the panels between the tool to apply the curve to the parts. The tool has a tighter curve than the model calls for, to account for springback.
  10. The panels should have a final curve radius of 90mm

Making the tiles (3d printed)

If you don't have access to a CNC, the 3D models of the tiles can be found elsewhere and printed (I recommend https://wirefram3d.com/products/baldurs-gate-3-mysterious-artifact but am not affiliated or sponsored in any way).

Attach the tiles

Tiles can be glued onto the base. I used superglue. Apply the glue near the edge of the tiles and stick to the printed base. Avoid getting superglue on the visible parts of the model, as the superglue can whiten and discolor the model.

Other Details:

All files are aligned so that the icosahedron's center is at (0,0,0) and it is oriented in a clean way. I extracted the corners from the thingiverse model, and include them in their raw form. I created an icosahedron mesh and ran the included python code to warp it into the correct shape. Then, the corners and warped icosahedron were combined together to create the full base. To remix, the intermediate files I generated in the process are available too.
