Introduction:

Electronic waste (e-waste) is a huge global problem, posing troubling environmental threats. Waste mobile phones are a big part of e-waste, mainly due to extreme demand & short product life-cycles.

While older smartphone models may be more compute & feature restrained, they provide an opportunity for affordable compute capabilities in under-privileged areas, where getting access to, for example, a Raspberry Pi is not possible.

The Nexus Rack is designed as a desktop storage rack for four Nexus 5 smartphones, operating as a distributed cloudlet compute cluster. I designed this rack for my colleague Perseverance Munga Ngoy's MSc thesis project where its also featured as “Cloudlet 3D rack prototype”: https://www.ims.ut.ee/www-public2/at/2024/msc/atprog-magistrit55-loti.05.036-perseverance-munga-ngoy-text-20231223.pdf (page 63)

Each Nexus 5 sits in their own cartridge unit, equipped with two power supply options & enabling easy maintenance access. In case one or more units require individual maintenance, the sliding cartridge design enables easy access to an individual  Nexus 5 without having to shut off the rest of the setup, providing some basic quality of life upgrades. When fully fitted with four Nexus 5 smartphones, the rack weighs ~830g and typical externally measured extended compute load temperatures did not exceed 40 deg C.

Description:

Fits 4 Nexus 5 smartphones, each in its own cartridge. Each cartridge features a LM2596 DC-DC converter for powering each Nexus phone in case of faulty battery. The base houses an MH-KC24-4 USB DC Fast Charge Buck Converter Module. Four (4) individual (short) micro-USB cables connect the fast charge USB module to each Nexus 5 in its own cartridge.

Threaded heat-inserts not required typically. Additional mounting screws needed for:

  • Cartridge:
    • Nexus 5 slides into place
    • LM2596 needs two M3 screws
  • Base, Lid & MH-KC24-4:
    • Need 4x M3 Hex countersunk screws

Cartridge4

Each cartridge can hold one Nexus 5 and one LM2596 converter (optional). The Nexus 5 sits snug inside the main body but is not retained by any means, however, a rubber band would suffice.

Recommend gentle hot air preheat of each base lid slot before inserting a cartridge for the first time. This ensure a secure, tight fit.

Nexus 5 Smartphone4In case of faulty battery, recommend using the LM2596 DC-DC converter as backup. Can often find this model in land-fills, online (eg. eBay) and your local flea market.
LM2596 DC-DC converter4Included as optional backup in case of a faulty Nexus 5 battery.
Rack Base1Tidy base to securely hold all components & provide some stability. Recommend adding rubber anti-slip self-adhesive standoffs.
MH-KC24-4 USB1USB DC fast charge buck converter module.
Rack Lid1Recommend gentle hot air preheat of each base lid slot before inserting a cartridge for the first time. This ensure a secure, tight fit.
Stabilizer Bracket1This is an optional stabilizer bracket that helps lock the cartridges in place.
M3x12mm Hex Countersunk Screw 17If not using the stabilizer only 12 screws are necessary.
USB A (male) to micro-USB (male)4To power each Nexus 5 conventionally (USB), need 1 (very short) cable for each cartridge in use, up to four (4) cables. In the shown build I manually cut & re-soldered long, cheap USB cables to shorter length but the end result was not pretty. 10-15 cm length should be fine.

Fusion360 archive files include the individual part files, design history and the models of the Nexus 5, LM2596, MH-KC24-4, screws and USB connectors.
