I thought it would be a fun challenge to build a soldering helping-hands that could be fully 3d printed. Much of the design is inspired by Omnifixo, except I used friction-fits instead of magnets. No additional hardware bits are necessary - even the spring is printable.

The spring is my Parametric Supported Spring. I also utilized JonK's nutsnbolts library for the threads.

Tolerances are pretty tight. I print everything in PETG with the PrusaSlicer .4mm nozzle, .15mm Quality preset, with 3 perimeters and 20% rectilinear infill. The spring has a built-in support that needs to be removed, but no slicer supports are necessary. Print several clamp sets for holding larger boards.

Assembly is pretty straightforward. Any elephant's foot should be carefully removed. The small peg should be glued into the bottom of the cup base. I use superglue. To assemble the jaws, place the spring and then the upper jaw guide on to the post. The hole in the end of the guide should face the cutout in the jaw part of the post. Then insert the upper jaw into the cutout in the post and, while compressing the spring slightly with the guide, rotate the upper jaw until it can be inserted into the hole in the guide. Some force may be necessary to insert the jaw into the guide.

OpenSCAD source code is included for customization.

Update 2024/04/03: Changed board to use a chamfer instead of a curved bevel; Added a hole to the ball to prevent a vacuum when removing the post; Replaced spring with my Parametric Supported Spring.
