I wanted to create and print my own case after I have tried many cases for the iPad mini. After getting the pencil the search got even harder as most of the cases have an awkward way of surrounding the pencil. I have tried many iterations and have been using this case for almost a year now. I was able to achieve a decent fit. For a short while I have moved back to the original Folio case but i was happy once I switched the orange one back on.
I really like the rugged look and feel to it, honestly I never tested its toughness though. It protects well against bumps and the screen protector that i clip on when I am traveling gives me more confidence. The Pencil never slipped off and wandered through the backpack.
I don’t know if the pencil or the iPad like the slide motion that the case induces.
Charging port is reachable with most standard plugs. I don’t know if the screws actually impose attenuation to the wireless signals but so far I did not feel any issues.
The two holes on the long side next to the Pencil are for the ambient light sensors.
The screws are from type: M3*8 mm T10 Threadfroming (can be found at McMasterCarr ;-) ) and you need 14 pieces. Get hundreds of them and use them for every, they are great.
Print instructions:
- The case was printed in PETG and the Bumpers in TPU
- Print the TPU parts really slow and turn on cooling (especially the small parts)
- Print the ”Rubber Bumper Side“ 2x
- Place the “front” of the top part on the print bed
- Place the “back” of the bottom part on the print bed
- Print the “Volume Rocker“ 2x
- You may need some modifications of the holes for the volume rockers
