Usage

This is a portable simple alternative to a traditional ski vise which may even be quicker to use. You can lay the skis flat for waxing or insert them in the slot for edge tuning and sharpening. It holds them very well both ways thanks to a cheap resistance band glued on the top surface and feet. A resistance band provides and exceptional amount of grip!

One stand is designed slightly smaller (but same height) so it easily stacks inside the second one. Put your tuning tools inside for storage and carrying.

Print details

I printed in ASA on Creality K1 using a 0.6 nozzle, 0.36 layer height, 2 walls, cubic infill. You can find the full print profile for Orca in the files. It used 565g of filament and about 8 hours print time total, 2 hours for each of 4 parts.

For weaker materials like PLA I recommend thickening the shell which you can easily do thanks to the parametric file available for Fusion360. You can also make the stand size larger or smaller depending on your printer bed size.

For my original print file (labeled as “don't print”) there is an issue: the slot for the skis is too deep which makes sharpening difficult (not enough clearance for the edge file guide to pass). I had to print the additional shims to raise the skis a bit and they worked perfectly. Also the top surface in this file has a too deep emboss (1.5mm) which is too much for the thin resistance band (I was originally planning to mold some silicone inserts for this part).

Improvements welcome!

Currently this model has a minor issue I'd like to fix and I need a second brain or two to help me. I fixed the rubber band using two-sided tape and masking tape. I would like to find a more permanent solution, I think some slots or holes can be added to fix it. This goes both for the feet and the top surface. Please let me know if you have any ideas!

Build details

Materials:

  • Eryone ASA (560g)
  • Cheapest exercise resistance band you can find (I got mine for $1), 150-200mm width and ~0.5mm thickness, it makes a perfect anti-slip surface
  • Glue to connect the printed parts
  • Masking tape and double-sided tape to glue the rubber band (you can also use glue)

Steps:

  1. Print all 4 parts of the stand
  2. Optionally lightly sand the connectors for stronger glue hold
  3. Put glue on the connecting pieces and attach according to your glue instructions
  4. Cut about 3x7.5cm pieces for the feet, attach them with double-sided tape and masking tape
  5. Cut two ~25x7.5cm pieces for the top surface and attach them in a similar way.
