Note that there are two versions of mounts provided - One accepts a removable cover and the other has no removable cover ability. The one that accepts a removable cover has an annular ring on the bottom designed to help prevent any light leakage around the edges when the cover with its mating ring is installed. The cover could also be used as a diffuser if printed in a transparent material. If your material has transparency but your intention is to block all of the light then you can install a piece of aluminum foil between the light and the cover.

A photo is provided which illustrates the general assembly process and tools required for assembling the removable cover version. You will need the following parts:

  • Brass heat set inserts M2.5xD3.5xL2-5 (must be M2.5 with a 3.5 mm outer diameter but the length can be anywhere from 2 to 5 mm)
  • Screws M2.5x8mm - stainless steel is recommended for permanent outdoor installation

The mounts and cover should require no supports when printed in the default orientation with a nozzle ≥ 0.4 mm.

Print them with a UV resistant plastic if installing outdoors and remember that attic spaces can get very hot. Choose your material wisely. PLA is not recommended. I used grey PETG which I think will last a very long time but I will update this description if it doesn't last very long.

The Govee lights should slide right into the mounts and be temporarily retained by integrated clips. I do not recommend that you rely on the clips to permanently hold the lights in the mounts. Even if it feels secure now, 3D printed parts can warp and change dimensions over a long period of time, especially when subjected to outdoor or attic conditions. I recommend using a flexible adhesive proven for long term reliability to glue your lights into the mounts as the last step before you glue the mounts into your ceiling.

The adhesive I used and the adhesive I highly recommend is White Lightning 3006 Advanced Formula which is a siliconized acrylic latex caulk guaranteed for 45 years! It's great stuff and best of all it's extremely affordable. You can get a 10 oz tube from Lowe's for only $4.

Plan everything out before you start drilling holes. The joists in the attic space at my install location were spaced 24 inches on center, so in order for the Govee wires to go over the joists and not require any notching of the joists, I spaced the lights 12 inches on center. This is closer than usual but not really noticeable unless you know what to look for. The effect is really clean and I'm very proud of the result. I hope you enjoy all of the photos!

Use a 42 mm or 1-5/8" hole saw appropriate for your ceiling material to drill the holes for the mounts which have a 41 mm diameter plug. I used a TCT Tungsten Carbide Tipped hole saw to drill through a concrete ceiling. Don't underestimate the amount of work required for installing a large number of lights this way. One hole is easy enough but dozens of holes proved to be extremely exhausting and my TCT saw shows quite a bit of wear now but still cuts.

This design is part of a series of things I designed for Govee permanent outdoor lights. I also designed screw clips for mass production, a 3 inch spacer installation tool, power supply and controller wall mounts, and gable roof peak mounts. Take a look and see if there's something else you can use!

The FreeCAD .FCStd files are provided if you would like to change the dimensions or design of whatever you want. The step files are also provided if your slicer supports step files for better resolution.
