3D Printable Solar Filter – SharpStar 61EDPH V3

Description

This is a front‑mounted solar filter holder designed specifically for the SharpStar 61EDPH V3 apochromatic refractor (61 mm aperture). The model is intended to securely hold certified solar filter film in front of the objective, enabling safe white‑light solar observation and imaging when used correctly.

The design slips over the telescope’s dew shield and uses a snug friction fit (optionally enhanced with felt or foam tape) to prevent accidental removal. The filter film is clamped between two printed rings, keeping the film flat, stress‑free, and protected from wind or handling damage.

⚠ Important: This is a mechanical holder only. Optical safety depends entirely on the correct filter material and proper assembly.

Key Features

  • Designed for SharpStar 61EDPH V3 front dew shield

  • Front‑mounted design (objective end, not eyepiece end)

  • Two‑part clamping system for solar film

  • No tools required for installation on the telescope

  • Lightweight and travel‑friendly

  • Suitable for visual solar observation and solar imaging

Printing Recommendations

  • Material: PLA+ (visual use), PETG or ASA (preferred for heat resistance)

  • Layer height: 0.2 mm

  • Walls: ≥3 perimeters

  • Infill: 20–30% (gyroid or grid)

  • Supports: Not required

  • Orientation: Print rings flat on the build plate

Dark colors are not recommended if the filter will be exposed to strong sunlight for long periods.

Bill of Materials (BOM)

  • 6× M3 screws

  • 6× M3 hex nuts (hexagonal bolts)

  • 1× Ruthex M4 threaded insert (optional )

  • 1× M4 screw (optional – used with the M4 insert)

Notes:

  • M3 hardware is used for the primary clamping and structural assembly.

  • The optional M4 Ruthex insert and screw can be used for an alternative or reinforced locking mechanism, depending on your build preference.

  • Stainless steel hardware is recommended for outdoor use.

Assembly Notes

  1. Measure the outer diameter of your dew shield before printing and scale the model if needed.

  2. Cut certified solar filter film slightly oversized.

  3. Sandwich the film gently between the retaining rings (do not stretch the film).

  4. Ensure the film is wrinkle‑free and undamaged.

  5. Test the fit indoors before any solar use.

⚠ Solar Safety Warning (READ CAREFULLY)

  • Never look at the Sun without a properly installed, undamaged solar filter.

  • Use only certified solar filter film designed for direct solar observation.

  • Inspect the filter before every use for pinholes, tears, or loose fit.

  • This filter must be mounted in front of the telescope objective at all times.

  • The designer and printer assume all responsibility for safe assembly and use.

Permanent eye damage can occur instantly if these instructions are not followed.
