The Raspberry Pi Meteor System (RMS) is a low-cost, open-source / open-hardware project designed for citizen and professional scientists alike. RMS combines the respectable processing power of the Raspberry Pi single-board computer (SBC) with an inexpensive IP camera module to create a meteor camera system rivaling (and often exceeding) the capabilities of professional systems that can cost upwards of 10x as much.
For the printed parts, you'll need the upper, lower, and window holder at a minimum. I try to orient things to print without supports, but you can also use paint-on supports in Prusa Slicer for the few areas that may print better with supports.
I'd recommend using either PETG or ASA for your prints. I've had some of these housings (using PETG from 3dprintingcanada.com) outside for years with no apparent degradation.
To make your own housings you'll need the following parts in addition to the printed parts.
- 4x M3 heat set inserts
- 4x M2 heat set inserts
- 4x M3x35mm machine screws
- 1x 43 mm UV filter (Usually a 46 mm camera filter will have a 43 mm OD when removed from its mounting ring)
- 1x 68 mm silicone o-ring
- 1x ¼-20 stainless nut
- 1x ¼-20 ¾" or 1" long stainless bolt
- 1x ball mount
- Silicone sealant to glue the window into the retaining ring
- For the magnetic base, you'll need 6 pcs 10x2.6 mm neodymium magnets
Depending on which camera module you're using, you may require additional M2 standoffs and machine screws. Ideally, you'll use enough standoffs to place the front of your lens about 5 mm behind the filter window. I've tested this with IMX291, IMX307, IMX327, IMX662, and IMX678 using different combinations of printed spacers and standoffs.
I also have designs for magnetically-attached housings which I can also upload if there's interest.
Thanks for looking!
