Updated Information gleaned through Krell Contact:
The Vase is actually A Krell Incubator. The fertilized eggs would be placed in the lower part of the container and then the male would excrete a viscous and sticky substance from a special salivatory gland in his mouth to seal the top. It would form a sticky bubble to protect and further incubate the developing embryo. It was also nutrient rich and would be digested as food by the hatchlings.
