Use this cyclone dust separator to collect large amounts of dust (e.g. sawdust) in a bucket while keeping your vacuum filter clean. Very helpful in a workshop!
The idea is that particles are sucked into the cone, get slowed down by friction on the side walls and fall into a bucket. Only a few and very light particles enter the vacuum cleaner itself.
The model:
The dimensions are derived from the well known “dust commander” commercial product. You can get it e.g. from Amazon. Compared to the commercial original, I reduced the height a few mm to fit most 3d-printer Z-dimensions. The max. part height is 249mm. Beside that I added ribs to strengthen the structure and make it printable.
Connectors:
The diameter of inlet and outlet are 50mm. I use a drainpipe reduction from the hardware store to connect my vacuum cleaner. See image.
Performance:
Very good! An overwhelming part of the dust is collected in the bucket and almost nothing enters the vacuum cleaner filter.
Printing:
The only overhang that might need support is the upper part of the horizontal inlet. I added some support there using the support painter function (see images). However, you can print it without any support at all, leading to a rougher finish.
Assembly:
Use epoxy, superglue or any plastics glue to attach the top cover to the cone. A rib enables perfect and easy alignment. Done!
