This sundial and its square predecessor referred to above are designed to be used and therefore mounted in your garden or yard. For that reason they must be fabricated from a heat tolerant fibre such as Pet-G or betters still ABS etc. PLA will not withstand full summer sun without warping and distorting.
Start with Sundial_Octagonal.scad and edit with Openscad which can be freely downloaded. You do not need programming skills to create the perfect sundial.
Open the scad file and change the first eight lines of the script to match the proposed site for the sundial. The lines are commented to help you. These are latitude, longitude (both in degrees), House name, script for hour numbers, timeZone (0=UT), daylight saving time correction, name for DST (e.g. Summer Time) and scale. The default scale gives a dial size of 194 mm.
Save the model file then press F5 to display it, then F6 to render it and finally F7 to create a new .stl or other model file. The included Sundial_Octagonal.stl is only for inspection as it is configured for Carnsore Point in SE Ireland.
The model could be printed in wax, castable filament or perhaps PLA to make a sundial in brass or bronze by a lost wax process. If someone does this please leave me a message, I would love to know how successful it was.
