An ergonomic and shortened portafilter handle for the Decent Espresso DE1 portafilter.

With a wider end and a shorter overall profile, it fits much better in the hand than the original, and stays more out of the way during the espresso workflow.

Print Notes:

  • Material: PLA or PETG
    • PLA+ was successful here, and with my workflow primarily being 1-2 espressos at once, the temperature stays pretty low on the portafilter. Print in PETG or something more thermally resistant if you're concerned
  • Print orientation: Screw-side down is the only way it can be done
  • Infill: 40% Gyroid or Cubic
    • Given the print orientation leaves it a little more delicate along the axis of force (when moving the portafilter in and out, the more infill the better - to a point)
  • Layer Height: 0.20mm or Variable layer height
    • All overhangs are fairly shallow, so 0.20mm is fine functionally, however for aesthetics a variable layer height will look much better.

Additional Requirements:

  • To attach to the portafilter, use an M10x20mm set screw
    • It's worth tapping this first with an M10 tap, though you can try with just the screw if you'd prefer.
  • For structural integrity, there's space internally for a 2mm x 59.6mm rod (stainless steel is recommended). There's no downside to leaving this empty (other than print time/material use) if you choose not to add the rod (and it can be added later if you change your mind)
    • An overhang above the set screw hole exists between the rod space and the set screw hole, allowing the print to work much more smoothly. Simply pierce the hole with the rod or a drill bit when you're ready to add the rod.
    • There's a 0.05mm diameter tolerance in the rod space, and it's recommended to trim the rod to 59.5mm at most as it may not go all the way to the end.

Note: the diameter of the section that joins onto the portafilter is about 0.05mm wider than the portafilter. I chose to chamfer mine with a deburring tool post-print to smoothen that transition, if you'd prefer a more seamless transition I'd be happy to upload a modified file.
