AVRO ARROW CF-105
If you don't know the history or the tragic story of its abrupt cancellation you should do a deep dive on the internet. There is plenty of material there. If you found this model as a result of a search then you probably already have some knowledge.
I have a soft spot for the Avro Arrow and was unable to find a good model on the web. My father-in-law worked on the project in the 1950s as a draftsman/engineer. He passed away recently and left behind tons of Avro drawings and books. I used these to begin my adventure with Fusion 360. I could be better with the software so it took several tries to get parts to fit right and maintain the original design. Well, although not exactly the original, here is my effort!
After making several of @Martin spacecraft models, I was inspired by the methods of construction he uses for his models. Thanks @Martin ! You should go have a look at his models, amazing.
PRINTING
I print on a 254X254mm bed so all the parts fit on that size platform. All my prints were done with PETG. Some parts will need support and some you may want to print at finer than .2 layer height for better detail. Also, I tried printing the wings flat but in keeping with the original design, they are very thin, so I got the best details by printing them on the root of the wing. I've included some files with "dog ears" to help print in that orientation.
I did some painting, but most coloration was done by changing the filament at a determined height in the slicer. The final model measures 49cm.
ASSEMBLY
Unlike most of @Martin models, this one will require some gluing. Test fit the entire model before you glue anything! The tabs and interlocks I created are mostly for proper alignment. Although all the tabs, interlocks,.axles, and holes have very tight tolerances, you still may want to glue all or just some of the parts.
I worked very long and hard on this project and would love for nothing more than for you to share your prints of this model with me in the Make section. I’d also appreciate some feedback, whether good or suggested improvements.
Cheers! Happy Printing!
