After updating to the latest fimware on my Ender 3 S1 I wanted to use embedded gcode thumbnails from Orca slicer. It works in the Creality slicer and I got nice pictures on the screen but any scripts and instructions for Orca doesnt works. So I take an almost working script, fixed it and polished to get an acceptable, clear and auto-resizable gcode thumbnails, so it looks as good as official from Creality slicer. Also I made standalone .exe for easier install.

Feedback

To be honest, the thumbnails isn't something important but it can be very useful to see clearly what you want to print right now. I made this as part of my Python debug practice. If you will use this script as .exe or .py - feel free to DM me about bugs. It does nothing with the actual printing gcode so it should not affect settings, speeds or accuracy of your machine.
I haven't checked this script in the PrusaSlicer or original Slic3r but you can. I can't give you any recommends about that.

Install

There are two options.

Executable file (no-Python)
  1. Take the .zip and unzip it to C:\Users\[your_name]\AppData\Roaming\OrcaSlicer
  2. Write the full path with commas to the thumbnailgen.exe in the Orca “Post-processing Script” field
  3. Make sure that you have correct Printer Settings:
    G-code flavor - Marlin 2
    G-code thumbnails - 300x300
    Format of thumbnails - JPEG
Python script
  1. Install Python.
  2. Install Pillow.
  3. Take the .py script and place it here C:\Users\[your_name]\AppData\Roaming\OrcaSlicer
  4. Write the full pathes with commas to the script and your Python installation in the Orca “Post-processing Script” field
  5. Make sure that you have correct Printer Settings:
    G-code flavor - Marlin 2
    G-code thumbnails - 300x300
    Format of thumbnails - JPEG

Now this script will work every time when you export the gcode.

Notes

Ender firmware uses 200x200 embedded jpeg format but I recommend to use 300x300 in the settings. The script itself will resize it after the cropping that improves the look especially for smaller prints.
