This is my second remix of LoboCNC's fantastic Gyroman model. I found it annoying to use the pull string just for a few steps, so I enhanced my Gyroman print with a motor and batteries.
Now it can go for longer hikes ! (though it still has to decide which way).
Hardware
I use what I had at hand:
- The motor has a 22mm diameter, is 12mm high, and has a 2mm shaft. It was probably salvaged from a CD drive tray. Any model with the same diameter should fit
- The batteries are two 3.7V, 380mAh lipos used to power an Eachine quadcopter. They are connected in series. I also tried with a 6LR61 9V alkaline battery, but the amperage appeared to be too high (that was before using real ball bearings though).
Options and printed parts
STL files are provided to work both with the original Gyroman 4 model and with my previous Hinged remix. I only built the hinged version, let me know if there is any issue with the original.
Depending on the version you choose, you will need to print:
- motor_side.stl (or motor_side_for_hinges.stl)
- battery_side.stl (or battery_side_for_hinges.stl)
- pinion.stl
- gear.stl
Everything else is as in the original model, except that the main shaft does not need to be as long, but needs to exceed the other side by a few millimeters to be glued into the gear.
As alternative to battery_side.stl and battery_side_for_hinges.stl, you may use the original side.STL (or side_for_hinges.stl) and only print the small battery_holder.stl part.
Files for a 6LR61 battery are provided too.
Design and Customization
Everything is designed in OpenSCAD on top on the original files and using the SCAD files of my"hinged" remix, unmodified, which are included here for completeness. It should be feasible to modify the source for different hardware, though a larger motor will require changing its distance from the center of the flywheel, and modifying the gear/pinion pair accordingly.
