Orea Big Boy Negotiator

THE PROBLEM

Orea has not yet released print files for the negotiator fitting their new large brewer, the Big Boy. So, I made one from photos and measurements. I originally wanted to adapt other negotiator designs, but eventually found it better to start from scratch.

DESIGN BRIEF

• Fits into the Big Boy brewer with the right amount of clearance to press and fold filter papers.
• As the original negotiator features a large bottom facing fillet, design this brewer to be printed upside down.
• A small lip so the negotiator is slightly taller than the brewer when fully inserted, as seen in photos.
• Curved helical grooves with shape, number, and sweep to match the photos.
• Drains on the bottom to allow washing the pressed filter with water, as seen in the original photos.
• There is freedom on the handle shape, so design a handle like a taper since the action of pressing the filter is similar.

THE MODEL

After fitting the overall shape to the brewer, I made grooves and drains to match the photos. The interior contains a tamper style handle with room for the hand and sloping walls to allow for upside down printing.

THE PRINT

Print upside down at slower speeds to keep a good surface finish. The bottom of the negotiator (top of the print) benefits from nozzle ironing to prevent a rough surface which may rip the filter paper.

The negotiator is never exposed to real stress or anything hotter than hot water. Choose any filament that works and doesn’t contain anything toxic.

ASSEMBLY

Fold filter papers as described in the Aramse video below. Press, twist, and ash the whole thing to set the filter paper. Brew and enjoy.
