I saw several ideas in Printables and Makerworld, but nothing really convinced me. So I designed my own smart adapter. Problem was that they fitted too tight or too loose, adapters flying all through my shopfloor.

Designed with TinkerCad. Outstanding features:

  • Inner diameters of spools may vary from 74 through 79mm (79 might be a bit lousy?), intended spools by "Geeetech".
  • 3 Spring elements that hold the adapter in place
  • Springs held by dowel-pin technology (pin in hole)
  • Easy to disassemble springs from adapter
  • Easy to pull off
  • Touching edge which goes over the spool core is smoothened
  • Fingernailslots integrated
  • Easy to print, no supports

I choose PETG for adapters and PLA for the springs. PETG for springs may be better, but they might be softer, so eventually play with expanding them a bit more (for more springforce).

Adapters printed on my Prusa MK4 in PETG, springs printed on my Bambu Lab A1 in PLA.

Over the time you might see some more variants, so stay tuned. Best is to tick “Follow the designer”.

Good luck with your fixture and Happy Printing!
