Šumperák – A Czech Architectural Icon
The Šumperák is a distinctive type of family house designed in the late 1960s by Czech architect and designer Josef Vaněk (1932–1999). Its design was inspired by the Brussels Style, which became popular in Czechoslovakia following the country's presentation at Expo 58 in Brussels.
The first house of this type was built for the director of the hospital in Šumperk, a town in the Czech Republic. This is where the house got its unofficial name, Šumperák. Its official designation was Family House Type V.
The second house of this design was built at 3 Terezínská Street in the centre of Šumperk, where it still stands today. The design quickly gained popularity, and approximately 20,000 Šumperák houses were eventually built throughout Czechoslovakia. Although around 5,000 sets of building plans were officially sold, the plans were frequently copied and distributed.
In the early 1970s, the construction cost of a Šumperák was approximately 120,000 Czechoslovak crowns (Kčs).
Original Model & Enhanced Model
The Enhanced Model is now available!
We've added an enhanced version of the Šumperák model, featuring numerous small details that make the house look significantly more realistic. From finer architectural features to more realistic proportions, the enhanced version is designed for anyone who wants to take their miniature model to the next level.
Which version should you print?
Original Model – Recommended for smaller scales
If you plan to print the model at its original scale, I recommend sticking with the original version.
There are two main reasons for this:
Many of the enhanced details would be too small to be clearly visible at smaller scales.
Some parts of the original model, such as the balcony railing, have been designed with a specific minimum thickness to ensure they can be printed reliably, even at 1:160 scale, while retaining the railing itself.
Enhanced Model – Recommended for larger scales
The enhanced version features significantly finer and more realistic details. For example, the balcony railing is much more delicate and realistic, with thinner elements that better match the appearance of the real building.
However, these finer details may become too fragile or difficult to print at smaller scales.
For this reason, I recommend printing the Enhanced Model only if you intend to scale it up to a larger size. This will allow the additional details to remain visible and give the model a much more realistic appearance.
Choose the version that best suits your intended scale and enjoy building your own miniature Šumperák!
Happy printing!
