Diatoms are common single-celled organisms that grow glass (yes, real glass!) shells. They are found all over the world and are an important part of healthy ocean, lake and stream ecosystems. In fact, by comparing diatom shells in a single riverbed core sample, scientists can measure changes in water quality over time.
When a diatom cell divides, it grows a smaller half-shell. Eventually they grow too small to continue, at which point they produce sperm and eggs which make spores to start the process over again.
These stackable diatom shells show this process of shrinking over generations. Two pairs of shells are sufficient to show shrinking, or print the whole set for a more dramatic collection. The smallest pair can hold four marbles to represent eggs. The pores are modeled as exposed infill, which is why STL files aren't provided.
Diatoms come in all shapes and microscopic sizes. This model isn't of a specific diatom species, but there are many that look similar—and many that look wildly different.
