This cryptex can be assembled without tools and require no other parts than the printed parts. (unless you opt for the advanced variant described further down).

The letter rings are soft snapping into position by an internal two way ratcheting mechanism.

The parts you need are:

decoration2nogold
indexing arrow2nogold
Top1yes(*)black
inner lid1nowhite (not visible when closed)
o-ring1no(actually not needed)
locking ring1yesblack or white (not visible when closed)

bottom1yes(*)black

Printing

I used a 0.2 mm layer height with a 0.4 mm nozzle and different brands of PLA.

Note that all parts are already oriented for optimal printing.

Assembly

There are two ways of printing and building this cryptex - the easy way and the slightly less easy way.

The easy way:

Just print and assemble.

  • Decorate top & bottom with the decoration  (ring) and the indexing arrow.
  • Build rotor assemblies by combining a rotor, a labelled ring and a spacer.
(match up the closest pair of “spikes” on the spacer with O-R)
(match up the relevant letter with the key groove in the rotor)
  • Stack rotor assemblies on the bottom, and secure them with the locking ring.
(the stacking may require some amount of wiggling and force.
  • Optional: Seal the top compartment with the o-ring and inner lid.
(you can probably skip the o-ring - it is not watertight any way)
The slightly less easy way

The top and bottom parts are actually prepared with a hollow void intended for adding metal washers for a bit of extra weight. It makes the cryptex feel more solid and substantial.

This is also why those parts need support - to fill out the void when not used.

The less easy way includes:

  • locating two 3mm thick washers:
    • top: 21x36mm (inner & outer diameter)
    • bottom: 17x15mm
  • print top & bottom without support
    • BUT, pause print on the "last layer" of the void/washer space, place metal washer, and continue print to embedd the washer in the part.

Happy printing & good luck!
