Inserts allow you to fill a standard open panel, either to simply decorate and fill the panel, or add functions to a standard panel without needing to design and print entirely new panels e.g. the 'Bearing' inserts shown in the images (these will be released once Shafts and Pins have been released). Printing just open panels, then different inserts for changing panel functions is more modular then specialty panels, although they will be weaker in strength.
I have included STEP versions of each insert, as well as the original FreeCAD file for custom modifications and insert types. The FreeCAD file contains a customisation spreadsheet, to set the insert to different levels of tightness (including custom values).
NOTE: It is easiest to install and remove inserts by pressing in one corner of the square, then the opposite corner. Just pushing the insert in or out in the middle can be very difficult. Also it may be easier to add inserts to panels first, before building them into a structure.
Insert Types
- Blank - A simple flat insert, to fill the inside of the square panel.
- Clip-1 - Includes gaps on one side to allow reinforcing Clips to fit on the panel edges (as shown in the images).
- Clip-2 - Includes gaps on both sides of the insert for reinforcing clips.
- Clip-3 - Another variant of Clip-2, where the corner legs have been removed.
Insert Tightness
I have included three versions of each insert, which give different levels of tightness in the panels, and to account for variations in printers and materials:
- Insert A - Average fit
- Insert L - Loose fit
- Insert T - Tight fit
- Custom - You can customise the fit of the inserts, by adjusting the parameter in the FreeCAD file spreadsheet (excessively large or small values can break the model).
