Why not try a test model that you can actually put to use? This hypercube ornament not only looks cool, but also tests your printer's abilities in several facets. If you succeed, you can use it as an ornament or centerpiece. Consider it a trophy for your printer's efforts.

This print tests:

  • Stringing
  • z-hop
  • thin spires
  • overhangs

How to print:

You can print this model with an FDM or SLA/SLS printer. If you wish for print this for it's ornamental value, I suggest you use supports or use an SLA printer. There are two main parts: The base part (printed in white) and the center cube (printed in black). The center cube is split into smaller parts and needs a little bit of glue to hold together. The base part should be oriented upright.

You will need:

  • 1 base model
  • 1 wide cube piece
  • 4 slim cube pieces
  • a little bit of glue

Print settings for FDM machines:

  • 0.1mm - 0.15mm layer height
  • 60mm/s print speed suggested
  • 3 perimeters
  • Supports suggested
  • 15% infill

How to assemble:

  1. Place the wide cube piece in the center hole of the base model. It should be able to be flush with 2 of the sides of the inner cube. There should be 4 sides that are NOT flush
  2. Take one of the slim cube pieces and apply a little bit of glue to the top of the nib.
  3. While the wide piece is still inside the center of the base, glue the slim piece to the wide peice. Use the divit to help align the pieces.
  4. Do this for the 3 remaining sides. See photos.
