Fingerprint Box Assembly Guide

Printing Instructions: Print the box in two main parts: the lid (with lock opening facing up) and the body (bottom surface on the print bed). Use PLA or PETG material for best results. Used PLA myself. Here are recommended print settings:

  • Supports: 4 top and 5 bottom layers
  • Wall count: 5 walls
  • Infill: 10% cross hatch (adjust as needed)

Special Printing Considerations: When importing the part into the slicer, have it remain as 1 piece, so that the strengthening pieces are properly placed. I copied them over 2 times, and deleted the parts not needed for that piece (ie body with reinforcement, lid with rod, and the sensor frame). Use Orca slicer's sacrificial layer feature to improve overhangs, particularly around the hinge area. Organic supports helped give a better quality to the overhang parts. Had to add some support blockers to prevent unnecessary supports (inside the body and in the sensor area of the lid)

For additional reinforcement increase wall count to 6. For the body's reinforcement set bottom layers to 0. This ensures that these are printed with extra walls and help strengthen the hinge.

Hinge and Assembly Tips: When assembling the lid to the body, be careful not to force connections. If the hinge feels tight, briefly place the body's hinge in hot water to make it slightly more pliable. Only heat for a moment - you want flexibility, not complete softening.

Sensor Installation: The fingerprint sensor comes with a separate frame that needs to be glued to the lid. Ensure precise alignment during this step. Place the slot to where you want the micro USB to be.

Locking Mechanism Details: The lock features:

  • Fingerprint sensor for access
  • Rechargeable battery
  • Capacity for 10 different users

Additional Components: A spring and plunger mechanism can be added to improve box operation. This is optional but recommended.

Plunger Installation Process:

  1. Remove the lock ring using angled nose pliers, it is a part that comes with the locking mechanism
  2. Attach a string to the spring to help compress it
  3. Carefully position the plunger through the spring when it is in the cavity.
  4. Secure the lock ring in place using angled nose pliers. Can be a bit of a chore

Post-Printing Refinements:

  • Deburr hinge flat areas in the hinge for smoother rotation
  • Remove any loose strings, especially on the rod part

Troubleshooting: Minor layer shifts occurred for me, but shouldn't significantly impact functionality. The print should have a solid feel

Optional Enhancements:

  • The plunger is a nice addition but not critical
  • The box will function perfectly without the spring mechanism

Compatibility and Materials:

  • Recommended materials: PLA or PETG
  • Flexible printing parameters allow customization

Final Assembly Advice: Take your time during assembly. Patience prevents potential damage to printed components. If you encounter difficulties with the plunger installation, remember it's an optional feature.

Printing Tips:

  • Use supports strategically
  • Leverage slicer features like sacrificial layers
  • Adjust settings for optimal strength and appearance
